About

How we got started

The Aotearoa New Zealand RNA Technology Platform was established in 2023 to seize the opportunities created by advances in mRNA and related RNA technologies. Its goal is to build national scientific expertise, capability, and long-term self-sufficiency in an end-to-end RNA technology ecosystem.

The Platform supports New Zealand’s ability to design, develop, and produce RNA-based therapeutics and vaccines. It brings together leading experts from multiple disciplines and institutions, creating a collaborative network that connects New Zealand researchers with international developments in RNA science.

The Platform is co-hosted by Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and the University of Auckland, with support from the University of Otago and the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research. It builds on and expands existing capabilities across the country, ensuring a coordinated national approach to RNA research and development.

In addition to advancing research capability, the Platform works closely with industry to help New Zealand companies develop new RNA-based products and services.

Ultimately, the Platform strengthens national resilience by enabling New Zealand to rapidly develop and manufacture vaccines for our population and for Pacific partners in the event of a future global pandemic.
